Today – Don’t miss the Love….Love of Dancing!
How does dancing help you?
Dancing help us reduce stress, increase energy, improve our strength and increase muscle tone and body coordination. It can also decrease our blood pressure, help manage our weight, strengthen the bones of our legs and hips and it can lower the risk of our coronary heart disease. So, what are waiting for? Let’s go dancing.

Alignments from the Ballroom Dancers.com
Alignment refers to the direction that the feet are pointing in relationship to the room. The 3 major points of reference in the room are the Line of Dance, the wall, and the center.
THE WALL
Most room have four walls, but the wall that is referred to when discussing the line of dance and alignments is the wall that the dancers dance closest to as they move along the Line of Dance. When you are facing the Line of Dance, the wall will be at your right-hand side.
THE CENTER
There are two centers in the room: (1) True Center, which is the actual center point in the room, and (2) Relative Center, which is the alignment directly opposite the wall. No matter where you stand in the room, if you face the Line of Dance, the Relative Center will be at your left-hand side. Alignments, as they are written in the syllabus, always refer to Relative Center (which is usually referred to simply as “center”).
FACING, BACKING, POINTING
In addition to indicating the direction of the feet, alignments may also refer to the orientation of the body or even the direction the body is traveling. When feet are pointing straight ahead and the direction of movement is forward (straight or diagonally) or side, the alignment is referred to as “Facing…” (eg “Facing Line of Dance”).
When the feet are pointing straight ahead but the body is moving backward (straight or diagonally), the alignment is referred to as “Backing…” (eg “Backing Center”).
When the feet are turned to an alignment different than the body, it is referred to as “Pointing to” (eg “Pointing to Wall”).
Why Dance?
Because it’s FUN
Yes. To dance just for the sheer joy of it. Just for the extreme delight and pleasure of moving your body. Just because it feels good. Kids understand these concepts with no questions and no problems. Grown-ups are the ones who usually struggle with the fun factor. For most young children, dancing doesn’t have to have a reason attached to it in order to engage in it. Many adults, on the other hand, tend to need a socially-accepted event or situation in order to dance; a class, a wedding, a bar, a live concert, etc. They also tend to need other people (and enough of them) to be dancing so they feel they’ll be accepted. When you dance just for fun, feeling good is more important than looking good.
Because it’s CREATIVE
Spontaneity. Imagination. Possibility. Being creative isn’t a gift bestowed on but a few lucky folks. Creativity is inherent in us all. Whether or not you call yourself an artist, you are creative. Dance is moving art. When you dance to express your creativity, authenticity and playful behavior show up big time.
Because it’s HEALTHY
Dancing is great exercise. For strength and stamina. For flexibility and fitness. Dance is more than just a physical workout. It can be an emotional and spiritual experience as well. Reduce stress. Release tension. Rest the mind and let your body move the way it wants. When you dance for your health, your entire being benefits.

New Dancer, a Beginner
I would like to address those of you who are just learning to dance. I want to tell you to have patience with yourself. Everyone, at one time or another, was in your shoes, a beginner. Don’t be discourage. Some dancers are happy to help in your development and may offer suggestions, if you want to, you can take the suggestion and apply it or you can say, thanks for the input and forget about it. These suggestions for the most part are a way a dancer means to say I would like to help you succeed!
Of course, there are times when the suggestion or tip my seem offensive and in that case you can just, let it go. Again, don’t be discourage.
It is in the best interest of dancers to encourage and nurture new dancers.
On the other hand, do remember, that as a new dancer you are encourage to take lessons and improve your skills. This will lead to an enjoyable expereince for both you and your partner. After all, each dance is a partnership and both of you should be able to have a wonderful time. It also makes you a more desirable dance partner.
I’m happy for your new endeavor and hope to see you on the dance floor .
